In this 2 hour workshop, learn interesting new combinations that really emphasize the "fusion" in tribal fusion bellydance. Learn how to make your combinations and choreography less predictable by utilizing different planes of space and exploring varied staging options. Strong emphasis is also placed on creating interesting transitions between combinations to make choreography more varied. Mini "workshop within the workshop" will consist of several exercises that will help dancers connect to their inner muses and learn effective techniques to generate new choreography. Tang Dynasty style - Classical Chinese Dance Workshop for the Belly Dancer :

Dances in the Tang dynasty inherited techniques that were developed in the past dynasties such as Zhou, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, and Nanbei. During the early Tang period, Buddhism was introduced to China, and because trade and social relationship with other countries rapidly expanded, dances were influenced by folk dances of other countries such as India, Rome, Persia (Iran), Korea, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam, and other Central Asian countries. In addition, it also combined with other forms of fine arts such as painting, scenery, and colorful costumes as well as poetry, classical music and drama. The combination of these colorful traditions brought the performing arts to a new peak, and the Tang dynasty has been regarded as the golden age for dance in ancient China. (60+ Chinese dance movements will be covered in the workshop that translate well into a Belly dancer's dance vocabulary.)

the Silk Road.

Why, yes! Yes you are!!!

I am one of the members of 4 Wench Productions and we produce an event called “Tribal Alchemy”. Now I know many of you think because of the word “tribal”, this event has nothing to offer to YOU. This would be incorrect.

What is Alchemy? By definition, alchemy is “ A medieval chemical philosophy having as its asserted aims the transmutation of base metals into gold, the discovery of the panacea, and the preparation of the elixir of longevity. “ How this translates to US is the mixture of different elements of dance and music to create something entirely new.

We offer affordable workshops, 36.00 each (which are approximately one week’s worth of fast food for most) and these workshops are instructed by some of the most sought after teachers around.

For the musicians, we have with us this year Mr. Dave Hall, who has toured with Solace Live and himself has been a drumming instructor for over 15 years. He has a vast knowledge base and much to offer.

For dancers who are not primarily of the “tribal” persuasion, one of our most requested an instructor (returning for a THIRD year) is Mira Betz. Her knowledge base is SO vast; it would fill this page to list every workshop topic she works with. She has taught workshops on Moroccan folkloric dance with us and this year is offering TWO very different workshops (one on improvisation skills and the other is all about the Taxeem!)

We have SOOZ, who is Fat Chance certified coming to share the ATS goodness. We have Theatrical bellydance, we have Belladonna bringing her unbelievable SWORD skills to teach. The list goes on and on!

The fact is, most bellydancers (no matter what style they fall into) use the same dance vocabulary. Our event offers the chance to learn some new ways to USE those moves, perhaps give you a FRESH view of your dance, and maybe turn you on to something you might not have previously been willing to try.

For 36.00 and a few short hours of your time, you can get a glimpse of something new and maybe start to figure out how some dancers “do that stuff”.

Most importantly, this event is NON PROFIT and benefits Safe Haven of Tarrant County. This center is a shelter and provides assistance for women and children who are affected by domestic violence. What is ‘Fusion Belly Dance’?

Fusion can mean many things to many people. I like the vagueness of the word… It leaves a lot of room to experiment and find your own voice. To me, it is mixing different styles and genres of music and dance into the dancer’s own individual interpretation and expression of their art form. My own personal stylization, or Fusion, is a mix of Tribal Fusion, Hip Hop bits I love to use, and something I call ‘Gooey-gothic’, which is something I’ve sort of created over the last year of performing in an Industrial Art & Music show.

About the workshop:

We will be jumping down the rabbit hole of ‘Fusion Belly Dance’ each week, where I will share the foundations of my favorite moves, explore stylization and touch on subjects like; musicality in dance, and intent in performance. I hope to challenge and inspire you to think outside the belly dance box and discover your own groove, with exercises in breaking the rules, listening to your body, and increasing your intuition.

This is an intermediate to advanced class focusing on my own funky stylization. This is treated like an intensive and we will be moving fairly quickly. I won’t be teaching any ATS or Cabaret, so it is essential that the students already have a basic knowledge of belly dance mechanics as taught in some of the more traditional disciplines, so we can move beyond the basics and get to the juicy stuff. There are many wonderful teachers to learn from first to build a solid foundation. Essentially, I want you to know the rules before I tell you how to break them!

~Ceiling height: 16' from floor to bottom of truss
~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" />............................................................................)
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show. ....

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
Knock 'em dead!
What works on stage, you ask, especially those bigger ones with the fancy lighting, back stages, and sound guys? This class is for those wanting an understanding of what really carries all the way to the back rows. Get ready for big fantastic whip-sharp moves supplied with clear and concise explanations for graceful and flawless execution. Tips and concepts to make you hip work bigger, sharper, and more polished (thus more effective on stage), and how to improve speed while not loosing clarity of movement.

The Art of Making It Weird (Slow, Lovely, and Strange)
We are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horizontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquisite and strange), belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

ABOUT ZOE JAKES…
Zoe is a proud member of The Indigo, which recently was on the road touring their new show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD. Her first DVD, a drum solo choreography, will be coming out this winter. Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to form the band Beats Antique, Zoe has just release their second album with CIA records, Collide. When not with The Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show, a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and Indian classical dance as well as all things vaudeville. Zoe was nominated for Zaghareets best interpretive artist 2007, and The Indigo recently won best troupe 2008. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.

Exploring the Anatomy of Power
Join Shakra for an extensive dissection of high impact movement to discover empowerment through power moves. Using action-packed movements from specimens such as West African Dance, Bhangra, and their own Transfusion Style, Shakra will show you how to harness personal power and channel that energy to areas of the body where it is needed most. This workshop will also observe ways we lose physical and mental energy that affects endurance and performance. Be prepared to be worked from head to toe so bring Schmatorade (half water, half Gatorade) or your favorite thirst quencher.

This class will be teaching you how to layer rhythms so you can make the beats you know more interesting, creating melodies for drums, and combining rhythms together to create songs for drums. You will also learn about odd beats such as 5, 7 & 9 and how to create your own rhythms too. This class is for all drums and percussion so bring what you have and is open to all skill levels.

The Cymbalist Movement: Integrating Finger Cymbals into Your Dance $36.00
Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren’t scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.

Tribal Alchemy is a NON PROFIT event that benefits SAFE HAVEN of TARRANT COUNTY. SafeHaven of Tarrant County is a non-profit organization created to help victims of domestic violence. They provide shelters, meal, clothing, education, counseling, medical and dental care and other services that really benefit the community. Last year Tribal Alchemy was able to give a van load of donations to SafeHaven along with some money. Thank you to all that donated! This year, their services have been taxed more than ever so lets show them how much we appreciate what they do for others!

~Ceiling height: 16' from floor to bottom of truss
~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture )
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show.
There are limited spaces so please send in your application as soon as possible

Workshops!!! Go beyond Hadouni! Let's learn some new kick ass tunes to rock the Jalsah!

Individual workshops are $20, two workshops are $30, take all three for $50!

2PM - 3PM $20
Basic Darbuka Technique and Rhythms -- Mark of Ishtar will teach basic darbuka-striking technique and six rhythms common to Middle Eastern music. He will cover how to hold the darbuka, proper posture and technique, as well as how to make the three main darbuka sounds--the "DUM", the "TEK" and the "KA". In addition, participants will learn how to change seamlessly between rhythms which is imperative for playing effectively with melody musicians. This class is perfect for dancers and drummers at all levels.

3PM - 4:30PM $20
Art of Taksim and Basic Makam Theory -- Melissa of Ishtar will cover: How to make your improvisational solos go somewhere and come back. Which notes are important in which makam. How to cue/communicate with other musicians. Also how to practice your improvisational skills. Tips on how to taksim for a solo dancer and how to handle a taksim in a choreographed dance. Recieve feedback concerning your taksim skills. Dancers welcome!

5PM - 6PM $20
Middle Eastern Music Ensemble For ALL Instruments -- If you play it, BRING IT! Drummers and melody musicians, learn songs together. Put your rhythms to the test! The members of Ishtar will break down several Middle Eastern folk songs that will be played at the Jalsah later that evening. This workshop is perfect for musicians and percussionists ready to try something different! Learn the basic structure of several popular Middle Eastern bellydance songs in an ensemble format. Percussionists can learn how specific rhythms fit particular songs and how to change seamlessly between rhythms. Melody musicians can learn popular Middle Eastern melodies and will be given instruction on basic makam theory. Specific songs will be determined by skill level within the class.

Le Serpent Rouge is a wily half breed of vintage cabaret and old time music. Internationally renowned belly dance company The Indigo have charmed the hearts of princes and tramps alike, while The Crow Quill Night Owls and The Gallus Brothers have seduced the tympanums of thousands with their arresting interpretations of old timey country blues, jazz and pop. Sometimes enchanting, sometimes macabre, often raucous, but always delightful, this outfit breathes new life into the movement and spectacle of a bygone era in their new knockdown revue.

Since the Indigo's inception in 2003, the company and its members have been seen throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. The Indigo has toured extensively with The Bellydance Superstars, Lollapalooza, The Yard Dogs Road Show, and has performed at a number of festivals including the prestigious Glastonbury Festival. The Indigo has created and defined a new style of belly dance, embracing the roots of middle eastern dance while incorporating an aesthetic reminiscent of early twentieth century cabarets and world's fairs.

The Crow Quill Night Owls are submerged in the depths of old medicine show music like a serpent eating it's own tale,
playing a mix of 1920's jazz, jug band music, ragtime country blues, and minstrel songs gone feral.
Kit "Stymee" Stovepipe sings like the surface noise of an old 78 rpm record and picks a resophonic guitar like a broke down engine on rusty zig-zag tracks. while Windy City Alex shreds the tenor banjo and sings with a voice like piano notes gliding through the spokes of and old bicycle. The band is composed of part old instruments and part old junk, including tub bass, washboard, National steel guitar, banjo harmonicas and kazoos. They've indulged audiences all over the West Coast, from big concert hall to dusty street corner, playing the obscure songs of a forgotten America that sets people's toes to tappin'.

The Gallus Brothers play rollicking good country blues peppered with old rags, pre-war pop songs and dance tunes. Devin Champlin syncopates wildly on a reso-phonic guitar, while Lucas Hicks brings the music to a new level by playing percussion on a suitcase full of bones, bells, and antique tomfoolery. They have played up and down the west coast from festival stage to smoky bar, wooing crowds with their music, their humor, and their willingness to jump on a table, stand on eachother, and juggle while playing a good old tune from way back when.

This event is a 4 day extravaganza of belly dance workshops, shopping, pro-shows, cocktail parties, showgirls, Elvis, festival dancing, and more!! Start the weekend off with our most exciting and fun workshop. Energetic, pulsating rhythms and movements, the Samba No Pe is the soloist dance made infamous at Rio's Carnaval. Get an excellent cardio and fat burning workout, more than the average kickboxing class, while learning the technique of this exciting dance form. Belly Dancers, add some extra spice to your dance vocabulary. SAMBA!!
Bring slippers or socks as some peoples feet get sore. You can also bring heels if you would like to try the dance moves in them. We recommend platforms or a chunkier heel.

Tribal Fest’s first ever “Tribal Bellydance Jam Band”.

Here is the deal... We are trying something new this year at TF. An open dance floor with a Jam! The vision is we have a core group of players and people join in and dancers do their thing..

Introducing the “Tribal Fest Jam Band”! Jeremiah Soto of Solace, Jeff Rees from Gypsy Caravan and Mizna and August Hoerr of The Mezmer Society (see bios below)

They will take the Tribal Fest stage and invite anyone who would like to come play with them to come up. Like a great drum circle! This is your chance to come up and jam with some of the most outstanding musicians in the bellydance scene today!

Bring your drum, your zills, your mizmar WHATEVER!!! Join them on-stage and add to the sound and excitement. Don’t be shy!! When will you have the chance to do this again??!!

Everyone is welcome to join in. Dancers, do you have a hubby or partner who plays something? This is their chance to be apart of the show!

Now if THAT weren’t enough excitement, of course it is an “Open Floor Dance Time”!!

Time for all you Tribal dancers to get up and show the world that you can dance as one. Improv at it’s finest!

Doesn’t matter what “style” you do or how long you have been dancing. Come on stage, or in front of the stage for an awesome open floor with what will be the best Tribal Jam Band ever to jam on a stage.

Jeremiah Soto
Jeremiah has been composing music since 1986 and has evolved through several genres of music including Industrial, Gothic, Electronic, Contemporary World and currently Middle Eastern Dance music. Arabic percussion has always been a fascination of Jeremiah's and he has studied with renowned dumbek master Souhail Kaspar as well as learned African polyrhythms and frame drum technique from Ronnie Engel. After being in groups such as Kokuein, Eventide, and Still, Jeremiah embarked on a solo
project, thus forming Solace in 1995.

Jeff Rees
Jeff’s first exposure to learning a musical instrument was playing the accordion and clarinet as a young boy. Jeff’s music took a big turn when he joined Paulette’s newly formed tribal bellydance troupe, the Gypsy Caravan. From travels and research he started playing the zurna from Turkey, the ney and the mijwiz from Egypt, and created the distinct sound of the Gypsy Caravan band. He now plays a vast assortment of horns and percussion, also including the Egyptian rababa, the Indian shruti box, the Armenian dudek, and the Australian didgeridoo.
Playing with Gypsy Caravan, Jeff also started a new band, Mizna, who released their first CD of tribal bellydance music in 2006. Touring the world with Paulette and Gypsy has been an enormously rewarding experience, as he has had the opportunity to play with musicians and for dancers in many other states and countries. With Gypsy and Mizna, Jeff has recorded nine CDs and various films and DVDs. He has made guest appearances on several CDs outside of Gypsy, including playing with Domba, Solace, and Americanistan. Playing music is Jeff’s meditation, his passion, and his art; he plays from his heart and soul.

August Hoerr, Accordionist
August taught himself to play accordion as angsty teenager, and after discovering Middle Eastern music, began working with Tribal dancers in 1999. Discovering a mutual interest in Balkan music and quirky party songs, he formed The Mezmer Society with Onça (Baraka Mundi) in the Autumn of 2007. They have taught and performed at events including Tribal Fest, TribalCon, and Tribal Revolution, and they are scheduled to continue touring throughout the United States. The Mezmer Society is fully committed to spreading the aesthetic of hafla joy as quickly and loudly as possible.
In addition to to The Mezmer Society, August is a member of the quartet Ashes in Order, and maintains a career as an internationally represented figurative painter. He is the president of the Institute for the Advancement of Occultism and Aerophonics (previously Asheville Accordion Club), and he has released albums with the cinematic trio Soora Gameela, and Greek fusion band Makari. August lives in Asheville, North Carolina and is currently working on material for his first solo album.

Happy New Year, and Happy Elevation sign ups!

Elevation 2009 is the 5th year of our yearly belly dance festival. It is held in the small Western town of Golden, CO, nestled down into a valley and up against the Rocky Mountains, near Denver.

The event venue is across the street from our store/studio Paprika, where some of the smaller classes will be held.
There are also hotels in the next block.

A beautiful river runs through the heart of town, and the largest brewery in the world offers free beer just 2 blocks away!

There will be 3 full days of classes, 2 excellent shows with pro sound, lights, DJ, and VJ.
The Fri night show is catered with a fabulous Middle Eastern buffet, and there will be attendee performances, and the Sat night show is for the teachers and a few special guests.

We hold our shows in a large club, and this really is one of the most FUN events around. It's not an event where everyone is made to sit quietly in a theater and suffer through long and drawn out shows. We have fun and dance and laugh and cut up and have a few dranky-dranks. We've got an excellent DJ of Indian decent from the Island of Trinidad that keeps us all jumping to his Chutney Soca and Bangin Bhangra rhythms.

This year is more family friendly with Kids drumming and dancing classes as well as babysitters for the Fri and Sat night shows.

There will be a great bazaar with Merchants from all over the country selling items from all over the world.

Jan. 2009: Sahra's Egyptian Folkloric Intensive Parts 1 & 2 in Iowa City, Iowa

Kahraman Near East Dance Ensemble will be hosting both Part 1 & Part 2 of Sahra Saeeda's Journey Through Egypt in Iowa City, Iowa in the near future. Part 1 is primarily a lecture/video workshop, with some dance/movement involved, on the historical and cultural foundations. Part 2 is much more focused on dance technique and movement. Each attendee receives a notebook, a DVD, and a certificate of completion.

Sahra holds a Master's Degree in dance ethnology, and did her master's degree thesis work in Egypt. She also worked in 5-star nightclubs in Egypt as a professional dancer. The Journey Through Egypt workshops package the results of her research into a workshop format.

If you're interested in coming, register early, because when we offered Part 1 here in July it sold out a month ahead of time. That's why we're offering it again, along with offering Part 2.

We will accept a maximum of 25 registrations for Part 1, and a maximum of 20 registrations for Part 2. (Sahra requested a smaller class size for Part 2.)

Since I have been free from the world of working retail sales for almost 8 months now after ofer 2 years of servitude, I have completely forgotton about the customer & employee stress that begats from the day after Thanksgiving... more commonly known as Black Friday. Ever thought stomach jiggling could be sexy? Maybe not. Women spend so much of our lives worried when we see those jiggles on our tummy when we brush our teeth, or are so careful to run up the stairs and avoid the butt clap.

In the "Flabs of Steel" workshop! Khadijah and Sonia will show you how to engage the proper muscles to work in "strategically placed" jiggles/shimmies to your dance style. The workshop will cover freeze/vibrational shimmies, flutteries, bounces, pops, locks and tucks using specific muscle groups to shake just the right part of your midsection Egyptian style! This workshop will be fun, challenging, and uplifting!

In preparation for a Bellydance performance many of us spend hours in practice, hours dedicated to make-up & costuming, but how many of us spend time tuning & toning the body that is the vessel of our expression?

Bellydance is one of the few dance forms were dancers are not expected to be fit. Why should it be that an art form that uses so many parts of the body to convey its message should we not expect to be fit and strong? Fitness should not be perceived as a bad addition to bellydance. It does not have to be torture, nor instill in us an image of bulging muscles. Rather it is a way of enhancing our glorious costumes, requiring less camouflage to hide our shortcomings, being less tired, decreasing the risk for disease, increasing our chances for a longer dance life and better overall quality of life. Being fit makes us more confident, appear younger, making us more marketable.

Professional Bellydancer, Luz, is also a professional fitness instructor and personal trainer with over 15 years of fitness instruction. She had the sensibility of a dancer in mind when creating her fitness routines for women. Inspired by the static exercises used by her chiropractor for posture correction and noticing the similarity to bellydance posture, Luz reshaped the way she teaches resistance training. Many of the exercises use one’s own body weight as resistance and a use of weight shifting with a lifted carriage, much needed in bellydance performance. Luz will address the body as a whole, from the legs, calves, buttocks, back, chest, shoulders, arms and abdominals. Many of the exercises will be directly related to the needs of bellydance performance.

What to wear: Exercise clothes that do not obscure the body’s movement, such as yoga wear (Melo’s are ok), leotards and tights or dance pants and close fitting top).
What to Bring: A large beach towel or yoga mat. Please bring a notebook. You will want to write notes that help you to remember the exercises
To be provided for class: a long strip of resistance tape.

Workshop will have a warm-up, exercises that strengthen the whole body and a cool-down with a long stretch. There will be time for discussion during a break mid-class.

Inspired by robots, experimental electronic music, and the poppin' and lockin' B-Boys of the 70s and 80s, Asharah has integrated mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she'll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance.
She'll also briefly discuss concepts of electronic music, how it is created, and how to listen to the nuances of music made by machines and computers.

Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form. Please bring a notebook, and wear yoga pants, a simple hip sash and a comfortable top.

Frederique David: New 'UrbanTribal Style' Moves (always evolving)

Want to add to your tribal vocabulary? Learn new moves with the ATS concept of lead and follow developed with non-verbal cues. Frédérique has created new Urban Tribal moves that have been inspired by a variety of ancient and modern dances with fundamental roots in ATS and Cabaret stylized belly dance. Class will begin with elementary yoga / palates based stretches / exercises, ending with isometric upper body strengthening that will help develop excellent upper body posture for dancing as well as our daily life. Be prepared to focus on strong technique throughout the class. By the end we will all be dancing new tribal moves together, as a tribe. *Prior knowledge in ATS is recommended but not necessary. I will go over the concept in class.*

Visions In Dance challenges you to dance different, to try something unusual. We will teach a belly dance/modern dance fusion choreography performed with... staffs. Explore this rarely used prop, as we present a choreography that will delve into how to utilize the staff without falling into traditional cane moves. We will also explore the essence of Visions choreography: why particular moves are picked, the nuances within a movement, and how it all ties into a story. Come ready to sweat! We ask that you please bring your own 4' tall, 1 1/2" diameter staff as we will only have a few extras (a wooden closet dowel rod cut to size will do). Knee pads are also recommended. DCDT Coming to Europe - Where should we go!?

In January of 2009, my company, Damage Control Dance Theater, and I are coming to Europe!
We are bringing our unique Funk Fusion Bellydance, and Choreography and Movement Invention workshops on the road far and wide, leaving clean technique, funky combos, and inspired dancers in our wake!
We will be teaching and performing in the BellyFusions Festival in Paris.
Once in EU, we'd love to offer workshops and performances all over the place!
The catch? We dont know anybody in Europe. =D

Marta is the director for Samba da Terra, Sacramento's premier samba troupe. She is a native from Bahia, Brazil and came to the United States in 2000 after teaching samba in Brasil for 10 years. Marta and her brother had a group of samba-reggae and participed in the Carnaval of Brazil with other famous groups from Bahia: OLODUM, ILE AYE, GANG DO SAMBA, HARMONIA DO SAMBA and more. Every year she represents the Samba Sacramento at the Carnival of San Francisco. Marta has been teaching samba in the Sacramento area for over 4 years and about 3 years ago she founded a group called SAMBA DA TERRA (Samba from our homeland).

The preparations for the 2nd Annual Midwest Bellydance Challenge
sponsored by Shimmy Chicago LLC are well underway and I'm so excited

CATEGORIES have met the minimum registration and will run.

Class Description: Get cheeky with Obsidia and Nari of L'imprevu! Learn vintage bellydance combos in a small class setting that will get you moving, thinking, and creating your own combos! You will be introduced to L'imprevu combos that have been adapted for soloists, partners, and groups of three or more. Come to the class as a soloist, with your dance partner, or with your entire troupe, as this format is deisgned for everyone! Participants will walk away from this workshop with usable, adaptable combos for every style of bellydance. Notes will be provided. Dancers should have at least six months of instruction to attend. Integrating Tarot and dance as a spiritual practice - Sugati
Throughout history, the tarot has traveled from sacred oracle to sideshow attraction, and then back again to an introspective practice in which we can better know ourselves. Within this workshop we will encounter how our dance can be a healing practice, one that opens a channel from our bodies to our spirits, while still incorporating the mind. Within this relaxed environment we will use improvisational Middle Eastern-inspired dance to power a connection, forming a relationship between the movements that we’ve learned and drilled as dancers and the ancient art of reading the tarot. Revealing how powerful it can be for our bodies to meet and take part within our spirituality.

Circadian, finding your inner and outer rhythm - Katie Bertsche
Rhythms fill our lives, from our waking and sleeping, walking, eating, coming and going...tides, the seasons, day and night, our habits and instincts join us with all dancing living things. And of course, Rhythm is the heart of bellydance. We'll explore together different ways to hear rhythm in music, and how we can translate that into movement. Is the music fast? slow? syncopated? even? Do you express the rhythm in yourself or can you have a conversation with it? What do you do when there apparently is no rhythm...we'll have to make our own!

Pops and Locks Laced with Smoove Slink - Joy Herbst
Are you craving more slink peppered with some syncopated locks in your tribal fusion dancing?
In this class Joy will lead you through style defining drills and exercises to better toggle between snake-like movements
and pops and locks. Combinations will be taught integrating the techniques learned in class.

Free Rhythm Warmup with Chris Phillips
We'll spend some time warming up and going over basic middle eastern rhythms. All drummers, musicians and dancers are welcome to join in. Free.

Begintermediate Dumbek with Dwayne Green
Beginners and intermediate dumbek players will enjoy learning and embellishing basic rhythms with Dwayne.

Shimmy for a Cure Bellydance Gala in Erie PA

On Sat 5/31. To benefit the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation. At the Erie Playhouse Theater. Tickets are $15, open seating, doors open at 6:30pm, performances start at 7:30 (but get there early to get a good seat and enjoy the tribal (chinese) auction. There is also a cash bar and vending. Our headliner is Zafira Dance Co from Pittsburgh PA, who will be conducting bellydance workshops the next day Sun 6/1 at the Avalon Hotel, directly across the street from the theater. Other performers include, Kamille of Rockabelly from San Francisco CA, Shades of Araby from Toronto CA, The Hadouni Dancers, of Erie PA, Kadri from Buffalo, NY, Sadiqa of Pittsburgh PA, Euphraxia of Buffalo NY, Salem of Erie PA, Evil Peanut Butter of Erie PA and Gypsy RaQ a rock band from Erie with bellydancers Carla and Vikki. Also, the show will begin with a spectacular Memorial Candle Bellydance that will be in honor and memory of those touched by cancer.
